Yata’s 12 Days of Anime – 2015 – #9: J.C. Staff and (NSFW) Surprise Hits

Screen Shot 2015-12-11 at 11.38.02 PM
(In case you haven’t guessed, this post is NSFW. Leave now if that could be an issue.)

J.C. Staff has never been among the greatest of anime studios. For the last few years in particular their offerings don’t seem to follow any specific genre trend, nor are many of them utterly awful. Their recent work of note that I’ve seen includes such shows like Golden Time, Ano Natsu de Matteru, Kimi to Boku, and Witch Craft Works, none of which are terrible, some even verging on recommendable, but nothing that substantially raised the bar or made J.C. Staff stand out in a world where other studio powerhouses still reign supreme.

But 2015 was quite a year for Japan Creative (bet you didn’t know what that stood for, did ya?) Staff. Instead of just putting out acceptably average works with a few duds here and there, they went absolutely bonkers in all directions. Some would argue nothing they aired this year worked. With cringeworthy filler contributions like Shimoneta, Tantei Opera Milky Holmes TD, Heavy Object, and Is It Wrong to Pick Up Girls In A Dungeon?, the studio aired at least one shit show all year long. But two of their most off-putting titles ended up being not only two of the studio’s most memorable shows in years, but also two of 2015’s best series…for reasons I can’t possibly portray in a positive light, but I’ll try.

Final Thoughts – Summer 2015

Yo guys, it’s Haru here.

Better late than never, I return to share my final thoughts on the shows of the summer so that I may finally lay this overall disappointment of a season to rest. L-K is still crafting his evil plans for world domination, and Yata is still puzzled attempting to figure out ways to prevent his college classmates from discovering his fancy for Prison School, so 2/3 of the For Great Justice team is still M.I.A. for the time being. Hopefully this means I’ve snagged the unanimous consensus vote for FGJ MVP, if such an award were to exist, right?

….right? ._.

Summer 2015 – Act 2 Update

Hey, folks. Summer may be rapidly approaching its end, but as far as anime is concerned, these summer shows are just ramping up for the homestretch. Yata and Haru are back again to bring you some updated thoughts on the summer season with two out of three months complete. We’re making do with what we have in this slim pickings season, and some stuff we didn’t think much of at first is proving to be surprisingly consistent. Who’s still going with what? And how is everything faring with one month to go? All this and more on our second mid-summer update!

Summer 2015 – Act 1 Update

Hey, folks. Summer was looking like one of the weakest anime seasons in recent memory, but Haru and Yata found a few things worth sticking with past first impressions week. With another month under their belt, how many will continue to make the cut this time?

(Hopefully a lot, because…)

By the way, although it’s been almost one year since this site’s inception, we’re still changing things up a bit and trying to work out some kinks. The midseason update articles used to be awkwardly titled with fractions, but it’s about time for that to change. At the moment, we’re going with this title format for future monthly updates, but if you have any suggestions, comment and let us know!

Anyway, on to the shows:

Final Thoughts – Spring 2015

Screen Shot 2015-07-03 at 8.27.46 PM
Yes, we’re aware it’s now July and thus already season transition time again. Sorry for the late publishing, but we were holding out for Blood Blockade Battlefront’s finale, which now seems to be on indefinite hiatus, though given the information it will be over a half-hour in length, I think we can expect a great conclusion. We’ll get that to you at some point, but we obviously can’t wait any longer to touch on the rest of this season’s finales. What ended well? What did we not care for yet somehow finish? And what was totally dropped? The answers lie ahead in this season’s final thoughts article!

FIRST THIRD THOUGHTS – SPRING 2015

Hey, folks. It’s now May, and one month into the spring 2015 anime season, For Great Justice is back to bring you our thoughts on this season’s best, worst, and most irritably average shows. Long story short: start watching Blood Blockade Battlefront.

Just a note: this will be Yata’s last article for at least a month and a half, as he’s going to be moving halfway across the country to go to college and that will understandably take up a large amount of his time and attention. Haru and L-K will be back for the Second Third Thoughts article over this season at the start of June, and hey, who knows, maybe we’ll even do a mid-season podcast or two with the whole gang.

Anyways, spring! What’s worth keeping up with? Read on!

First Impressions – Spring 2015

Hey folks, all three of us at For Great Justice are already back again to give you the rundown on the spring 2015 season! First impressions week can be a killer due to the sheer number of shows we feel obligated to try each season, and this time around we’ve watched over half of the pilots to new shows and thinned through the crap so you don’t have to. Show summaries, our individual thoughts, and “should you watch?” recommendations are below. You ready? We are now. We weren’t a week ago, or even last night. It was a little more like this then:

Help MeWe do this for you guys and great justice. As always, the following thoughts are only based off of pilot episodes. Some shows *ahem – Digimon Adventure Tri* haven’t aired yet. On the other hand, some have already aired second episodes by now. We know, we know. We’ll touch on those when we next post. Anyway, spring! Let’s do this:
