Winter 2016 First Impressions / Act 1 Thoughts

Welcome to 2016, everybody! We may be a couple weeks into the winter season, but that doesn’t mean we can’t still put out a belated first impressions and early Act 1 thoughts article! Instead of two separate posts, we’re combining them into one this time around, with Yata and Haru running down what we enjoyed or didn’t care for from the start of this year. Are any of the inevitable fantasy light novel adaptations watchable this season? Will pure CG ever be respected as a form of animation? And most importantly, does fan favorite ERASED meet the hype? Answers to these questions and more ahead on our early Winter 2016 Thoughts. Let’s do some animu justice, people!

Mars of Destruction Live Commentary Podcast

In this brief break between coverage of 2015’s summer and fall anime seasons, we bring to you one hell of a podcast. In every medium, there are great things, alright things, and terrible things. Every once in a while, one of those terrible things gains notoriety for being unintentionally hilarious. In anime’s case, Mars of Destruction is something of a cult classic. Its try-hardiness, complete lack of sense, and poor budget make it stand out as one of the worst anime (though it’s really just a 19-minute OVA) ever produced. And in the midst of one of the weakest anime seasons in recent memory, I guess we felt the need to remind ourselves that hey, at least the shows we didn’t care for weren’t Mars of Destruction-tier bad.

What follows is a live audio commentary of all three of us watching the remarkable shit stain that is Mars of Destruction. You can follow along by watching this and syncing the video up to our in-podcast countdown. Because this was uploaded a handful of weeks after it was recorded, an out-of-date recap on our thoughts of this summer’s shows is included afterward. Let’s just say some of them changed considerably. (cough Charlotte ಠ_ಠ)

Have a blast, folks. Fall first impressions will be out soon enough.

Final Thoughts – Spring 2015

Yes, we’re aware it’s now July and thus already season transition time again. Sorry for the late publishing, but we were holding out for Blood Blockade Battlefront’s finale, which now seems to be on indefinite hiatus, though given the information it will be over a half-hour in length, I think we can expect a great conclusion. We’ll get that to you at some point, but we obviously can’t wait any longer to touch on the rest of this season’s finales. What ended well? What did we not care for yet somehow finish? And what was totally dropped? The answers lie ahead in this season’s final thoughts article!

FIRST THIRD THOUGHTS – SPRING 2015

Hey, folks. It’s now May, and one month into the spring 2015 anime season, For Great Justice is back to bring you our thoughts on this season’s best, worst, and most irritably average shows. Long story short: start watching Blood Blockade Battlefront.

Just a note: this will be Yata’s last article for at least a month and a half, as he’s going to be moving halfway across the country to go to college and that will understandably take up a large amount of his time and attention. Haru and L-K will be back for the Second Third Thoughts article over this season at the start of June, and hey, who knows, maybe we’ll even do a mid-season podcast or two with the whole gang.

Anyways, spring! What’s worth keeping up with? Read on!

First Impressions – Spring 2015

Hey folks, all three of us at For Great Justice are already back again to give you the rundown on the spring 2015 season! First impressions week can be a killer due to the sheer number of shows we feel obligated to try each season, and this time around we’ve watched over half of the pilots to new shows and thinned through the crap so you don’t have to. Show summaries, our individual thoughts, and “should you watch?” recommendations are below. You ready? We are now. We weren’t a week ago, or even last night. It was a little more like this then:

Help MeWe do this for you guys and great justice. As always, the following thoughts are only based off of pilot episodes. Some shows *ahem – Digimon Adventure Tri* haven’t aired yet. On the other hand, some have already aired second episodes by now. We know, we know. We’ll touch on those when we next post. Anyway, spring! Let’s do this:
