Summer 2020 First Impressions

Hey, y’all. Yata here. On top of FGJ’s home country still completely fucking up this whole pandemic response thing, it’s officially Too Fucking Hot out, and you know what that means: summer is here! Normally staying indoors and bingeing some anime sounds like our idea of a fun time, but the mood turned sour twofold over the last few weeks; Haru has been feeling ill for the better part of a month and while his doctors have run tests concluding that what’s ailing him isn’t COVID-19, his top priority right now is getting rest and not stressing himself out over writing words about cartoons.

The second issue is that the anime industry itself got set back from when this crisis had its wave over in Japan last season. As a result very few showsI haven’t run the numbers, but probably the fewest we’ve seen in about a decade or close to itare airing weekly for the next 3 months, and that’s before taking into account how transparently mediocre most of the surviving batch is, or how two of the biggest hype-titles of the summer dropped in non-weekly formats. Masaaki Yuasa and Science SARU’s new adaptation Japan Sinks 2020 went live all at once, and I loved it so much I intend to give it a proper article of its own, so expect that within a few weeks. Studio Wit’s new title Great Pretender also seems cool, and I say “seems” because I actually haven’t gotten around to it yet; its first half came out in arc-length increments, but it likely won’t leak the second half until the fall, so I’m tempted to hold off for now and just watch it then.

What remains are slim pickings, but if there’s anime airing, someone’s gotta cover it, and here I am to answer the call. What’s worth tuning into weekly between now and September? Hell, what’s even airing, like, at all? Buckle up, ’cause it’s time for some first impressions.

Yata’s 12 Days of Anime – 2015 – #11: Sequels and Fulfilled Potential

Pictured above, Gatchaman Crowds Insight, Oregairu 2, Noragami Aragoto, and DRRR!!x2 all aired this year as wonderful sequels, on par with or better than their originals. 2015 in general was a pretty strong year for sequels, and not just because at least 5 or more seemingly aired each season. I always appreciate a quality sequel when it comes, but to have at least one each season rival or outperform their predecessor is a gift.

Final Thoughts – Spring 2015

Screen Shot 2015-07-03 at 8.27.46 PM
Yes, we’re aware it’s now July and thus already season transition time again. Sorry for the late publishing, but we were holding out for Blood Blockade Battlefront’s finale, which now seems to be on indefinite hiatus, though given the information it will be over a half-hour in length, I think we can expect a great conclusion. We’ll get that to you at some point, but we obviously can’t wait any longer to touch on the rest of this season’s finales. What ended well? What did we not care for yet somehow finish? And what was totally dropped? The answers lie ahead in this season’s final thoughts article!

FIRST THIRD THOUGHTS – SPRING 2015

Hey, folks. It’s now May, and one month into the spring 2015 anime season, For Great Justice is back to bring you our thoughts on this season’s best, worst, and most irritably average shows. Long story short: start watching Blood Blockade Battlefront.

Just a note: this will be Yata’s last article for at least a month and a half, as he’s going to be moving halfway across the country to go to college and that will understandably take up a large amount of his time and attention. Haru and L-K will be back for the Second Third Thoughts article over this season at the start of June, and hey, who knows, maybe we’ll even do a mid-season podcast or two with the whole gang.

Anyways, spring! What’s worth keeping up with? Read on!

First Impressions – Spring 2015

Hey folks, all three of us at For Great Justice are already back again to give you the rundown on the spring 2015 season! First impressions week can be a killer due to the sheer number of shows we feel obligated to try each season, and this time around we’ve watched over half of the pilots to new shows and thinned through the crap so you don’t have to. Show summaries, our individual thoughts, and “should you watch?” recommendations are below. You ready? We are now. We weren’t a week ago, or even last night. It was a little more like this then:

Help MeWe do this for you guys and great justice. As always, the following thoughts are only based off of pilot episodes. Some shows *ahem – Digimon Adventure Tri* haven’t aired yet. On the other hand, some have already aired second episodes by now. We know, we know. We’ll touch on those when we next post. Anyway, spring! Let’s do this:
