Summer 2017 First Impressions

It’s too hot.
Antarctica is peeling apart.
Don Jr. inherited more than just a name and spare Franklins to wipe his ass with.

And yet here we are complaining about anime, because if the world’s gonna end one way or another, we might as well appreciate some rapidly moving pictures in the meantime. There’s just one problem: this season’s not produced quite as many worthwhile ones as the last handful have. For Yata, that means a ton of bubble entries with few clear standouts. For Haru and Catche, that means virtually no standouts whatsoever and a lot of trash. But it’s not our job to remark about the industry as a whole right now. If you’re here, there’s a good chance that what you’re really looking for are our thoughts about each new production on its own merit, and we’re happy to provide! Which titles appear to be at least somewhat watchable? Which ones do we recommend never speaking of again? And can American democracy be salvaged? The answers to at least those first two questions lay in our summer 2017 season first impressions below. Jump on in!

Catche’s Fall 2016 Final Thoughts and Top 10 for the Year

So, 2016 has ended, and with its ending we have a chance to look back and examine all of the anime that came out this year. Now, 2016 actually ended a couple weeks ago, so I’ve decided to make it up to all you faithful readers out there by analyzing this year in the best possible way: By sorting my favorites into an numbered list, as well as having a quick look back at the Fall season.

“Why only the Fall season?” I hear you ask. Well, because I only wrote for this blog during that season.

So, without further ado…

Yata’s 2016 Anime Year in Review / Top 10

So here’s the thing. Usually, my posts on here are directed towards people who already know what I’m talking about, those self-proclaimed “otaku” and anime junkies who keep up to date with the latest productions and headlines and just want to hear my opinions on them, no walkthrough necessary.

But writing with them in mind limits my audience, and for this 2016 recap, I want to be a little more inclusive. This article is for hardcore fans and anime newbies alike; those in the know can compare their year in anime to mine, while the casual watcher will be given an overview of everything I’ve seen from 2016 – one that, if I’m successful enough with this, will hopefully act as a guide to what I thought was and wasn’t worth watching.

I managed to finish just over 30 shows this year and give a shot to just shy of another 30 more. At a minimum, everything I watched at least one episode of has a name-drop below. Only the top 10 are properly ranked; the rest are categorized in groups sorted by how far I got through them (early drops, late drops, or completed/up to date), as well as what kind of impression they left on me. This will be a bit lengthy, so let’s just get right into it, starting at the very bottom with the immediately-dropped abominations and ending with the cream of the crop.

Fall 2016 Mid-Season Thoughts

We’re back! I hope all our American readers had a happy Thanksgiving, just as we attempted to with varying levels of success. Just like some leftovers can sit at the back of the fridge and go bad after a while, so too can anime outstay their welcome. With an exception or two, it’s bad show scrapping time, and Yata and Haru are here to bring to you a quick mid-season update on where things stand heading into the season’s final stretch. We hope you enjoy it!

Fall 2016 First Impressions

And just like that, fall is finally here! This season marks the 2-year anniversary of us covering airing shows, which feels like a huge accomplishment in and of itself, but we know we can do more, especially with the relative decrease in our amount of content lately, which is why…

…I’d like to introduce Catche, For Great Justice’s first new writer! Covering our bases with some more action-focused series that have never been as up Yata or Haru’s alley (as well as Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure come mid-season), Catche is a pleasure to work with and we hope you guys enjoy the greater diversity in shows covered with the standard amount of snark you’ve come to expect from us.

And that means for the first time in over a year now, we once again have 3 writers in one article! With a whopping 22 shows under the lens this time, what stands out as our favorites this season? Read on to find out!

Spring 2016 Final Thoughts

It’s getting hot out there, and with the approach of summer, at long last Haru and Yata return to run down their belated (but complete) thoughts on any shows they’ve continued since the start of the spring season. It may have been a while, but many of this season’s offerings were consistent, which makes catching up with you all just a bit easier. What came out on top? What fell on its face? What stuck to a comfortable middle ground? Read on and find out on this update with For Great Justice!

Spring 2016 First Impressions

Ah, spring. The season of budding flowers, warming weather, and…loads of shitty CG animation? That’s what the forecast has in store for this anime season at least. But under the massive heaps of awkwardly thrown-in 3D animation, there still exist anime worth people’s time! On this first impressions article, Yata tackles Attack on Trains, the return of Studio Trigger, a bunch of superhero thrillers, someone named Soy Latte, one of the worst shows he’s ever laid his eyes on, and so much more! Read on ahead to see which spring 2016 shows pass first impressions week on For Great Justice!

Winter 2016 Final Thoughts

As tends to happen, the start of the spring season is already upon us, but we’ve still gotta wrap up a handful of anime from this winter! Spring looks absolutely stacked, so we may be a bit late with those first impressions (especially considering how this post will butt into that time), but we’ll get ’em to you somehow. For now, take one last jaunt through the winter 2016 anime season with Yata and Haru as they form their final thoughts about every current thing they were able to finish over the last three months.

Such as Sekkou Boys.

Summer 2015 – Act 2 Update

Hey, folks. Summer may be rapidly approaching its end, but as far as anime is concerned, these summer shows are just ramping up for the homestretch. Yata and Haru are back again to bring you some updated thoughts on the summer season with two out of three months complete. We’re making do with what we have in this slim pickings season, and some stuff we didn’t think much of at first is proving to be surprisingly consistent. Who’s still going with what? And how is everything faring with one month to go? All this and more on our second mid-summer update!

First Impressions – Summer 2015

Ah, summer. The nice fresh air, vacations and road trips, unbearable heat…bugs…work…nevermind, why go through that when you could stay in and watch fuckin’…anime? Haru and Yata watched a handful of pilots (only pilots) from this first week of the summer season and are here to tell you their thoughts. God Eater isn’t out yet, and I think that’s the only notable thing not included here. The outlook on this season going in was that it would be carried by a few sequels and we weren’t expecting much out of the new shows. Some surprised us, if only barely, and some raised the bar. Hell, Haru and Yata even disagreed about multiple things for once! What’s worth watching and worth moving on from already? Us bros give you the low-down on summer 2015.
